The Zanj Rebellion began in 869 AD in southern Mesopotamia, a major slave revolt against the Abbasid Caliphate. Led by Ali ibn Muhammad, enslaved East Africans (Zanj) working in salt marshes and plantations rose up, severely threatening the caliphate. This rebellion, lasting over 14 years, captured cities and devastated the regions economy. It significantly weakened the Abbasid state, marking a crucial chapter in the history of slave resistance and social upheaval in the Islamic world.
